About the journal
A language notebook with the curiosity of a magazine. An independent place to read about everyday Egypt.
Words are a way in
Ameyya Journal explores Egyptian Arabic alongside the culture, food, places and living traditions that give language its setting. Our starting point is the everyday: a greeting, a bowl of food, a building that changes how we read a street.
We publish in English for curious readers and learners. Some pieces are practical language notes; others are cultural introductions or invitations to look more closely. We do not aim to turn a whole country into a phrasebook or a checklist.
How to read this journal
Start with the language shelf for spoken Arabic, or follow the culture shelf into places and traditions. Short expression notes sit beside longer guides. You can read either at your own pace.
Our editorial approach
We distinguish documented information from editorial observation and illustrative learning scenarios. Reference links accompany cultural and historical introductions. Language examples use accessible romanization beside Arabic where useful; regional forms and pronunciation vary.
Our articles are introductions, not claims to speak for every Egyptian community. We avoid invented first-hand reporting and do not present illustrative dialogues as recorded conversations. Original editorial artwork is labeled as illustration.
